What Mariner was
Mariner was a research prototype that could browse and complete tasks in Chrome, later handling up to 10 tasks at once. It was only available through the Google AI Ultra subscription at $250 a month.
Where to go now
| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Hand off multi-step tasks (bookings, inbox work) | Gemini Agent, which Google's Mariner page now recommends |
| Let an agent browse inside Chrome | Gemini in Chrome with auto browse, announced in January 2026 and rolling out to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers |
| Get agentic help in search | AI Mode in Google Search |
| Build your own agent on Gemini | The Gemini 2.5 Computer Use model in the Gemini API (AI Studio, Vertex AI), in preview since October 2025 |
Google hasn't said whether Chrome auto browse was built from Mariner, so treat it as a successor in purpose, not necessarily in code.
