What happened
- 21 Oct 2025: Atlas launched on macOS as an AI browser with an agent mode.
- 9 Jul 2026: OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, an agent mode powered by Codex that can operate your computer from the ChatGPT desktop app, and said it would begin sunsetting Atlas.
- 9 Aug 2026: Atlas shut down.
Earlier, OpenAI's Operator was closed in August 2025 and folded into ChatGPT agent, which in turn gave way to ChatGPT Work. If you're searching for "ChatGPT agent mode gone", this is why.

Where Atlas's features went
- ChatGPT desktop app (Mac and Windows): now has a built-in browser and computer use, so ChatGPT can click, type and move files across your apps, once or on a schedule. The Codex app is being folded into it.
- ChatGPT Chrome extension: runs ChatGPT in Chrome's sidebar.
- Your data: ChatGPT conversations stay in your ChatGPT account. Atlas bookmarks did not transfer automatically.
Computer use in Codex launched first on macOS and was not available in the EU, UK or Switzerland at launch, so check availability where you are.
